ObjectiveTo retrospectively analyze the clinical effect of the combined therapy of Chinese and western medicines for optic atrophy in our hospital.Methods96patients’(167eyes) data were included in the study. These patients conformed the optic atrophy’s diagnosis standard and hospitalized in our hospital from2003to2013. According to the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) syndrome differentiation, the patients were treated by having the decoction which made from Chinese medicine, having the Chinese patent drug, along with having western circulation improving drug and having western neurotrophic agent. Some patients were taken supplemental treatment, such as acupuncture, intramuscular injection with mouse nerve growth factor (NGF), compound anisodine superficial temporal artery subcutaneous injection and so on. This study will observe the changing of the patients’visual acuity, visual field and visual evoked potential (VEP) before and after treatment to analyze what will influence the clinical effect. All these data were analyzed by Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS)19.0. Results1.Observation index:①In the visual acuity analysis result, the patients’visual acuity after the treatment had improved noticeably (P<0.05), the total effective rate was64.67%.②In the analysis of perimetry result,42patients (71eyes) with optic atrophy had been received perimetry before and after the treatment. The analysis result shows that after the treatment, the mean sensitivity and mean deviation were both higher, however the mean deviation showed non-statistical meaning (P>0.05).③In the analysis of the result of visual evoked potential (VEP) examination,34patients (60eyes) with optic atrophy had been received VEP examination before and after the treatment. The analysis result shows that after the treatment, the P100peak latency of Pattern-VEP (P-VEP) was significantly shorter (P<0.05) and although the N75-P100peak amplitude of P-VEP had increased, it showed non-statistical meaning (P>0.05). The analysis result also shows that neither before nor after treatment, the peak latency and the peak amplitude of Fresh-VEP had non-statistical meaning (P>0.05).④The visual acuity, the P-VEP and the visual field had no linear correlation (P>0.05).2. Efficacy analysis:①Based upon the analysis of the effect with different TCM syndrome types, the treatment for the type of stagnation of qi-liver had better curative effect and the treatment for type of liver and kidney deficiency had worse curative effect.②Based upon the analysis of the effect with different cause, the treatment for optic atrophy caused by optic neuritis had better curative effect and the treatment for OA caused by Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy had worse curative effect.③Based upon the analysis of the effect with different ages, the treatment for the patients between20to39years old had better curative effect and the treatment for the patients who were younger than20year old had worse curative effect.④Based upon the analysis of the effect with different course, the treatment for OA less than or equal to6months had better curative effect and the treatment for OA more than36months had worse curative effect.⑤Based upon the analysis of the effect with different based visual acuity, the treatment for the patients whose visual acuity was greater than or equal to0.5had better curative effect and the treatment for the patients who had no light perception had worse curative effect.⑥In the therapy of OA, the treatment adopted the combination of medical and acupuncture had better curative effect than the treatment adopted medical alone. All these curative effect analysis had statistical meaning (P<0.05). ConclusionCombined of Chinese and Western medicine therapy for optic atrophy our department used can effectively improve the visual function and electrophysiological function of the optic nerve, protecting the optic nerve from damage.
