ObjectiveThe small sample randomized controlled clinical study compares two groups’curative effect on Bell’s palsy during convalescence, the conventional acupuncture treatment and the treatment including grain-sized moxibustion on jing-well points of yangming channels and the conventional one, in order to investigate synergy in the latter one for Bell’s palsy.MethodsThe66standard objects, from the acupuncture clinic in the first affiliated hospital of guangzhou university of TCM, were randomly divided into control group and treatment group in a1:1ratio. The patients in the treatment group were treated by conventional acupuncture and grain-sized moxibustion on ST45and LI1on both sides. Those in control group were only treated by conventional acupuncture. Three times a week, once every other day. Three times were as a course. Evaluated curative effect after4courses. Observed the House-Brackmann facial nerve function grading scale and peripheral facial paralysis scale and compare two groups’effects on Bell’ s palsy during convalescence.ResultsBefore treatment, there are no statistical difference of gender, age, involved side, course, House-Brackmann and peripheral facial paralysis scale scores between treatment group and control group (P>0.05), which means the two groups are comparable. After treatment, both two groups’scores of House-Brackmann facial nerve. function grading scale and peripheral facial paralysis scale compared with those before have statistical significance (P<0.01), which shows that two treatments can improve the recovery of Bell’s palsy. In evaluation of curative effect, in control group, the result shows that cure rate is9.38%, markedly effective rate is50.00%, total effective rate is81.23%; in treatment group, the result shows that cure rate is12.90%, markedly effective rate is70.97%, total effective rate is93.55%. The difference between two groups has no statistical difference (P>0.05). However, in peripheral facial paralysis scale, the total scores between two groups have statistical difference (P<0.05)In the single items of peripheral facial paralysis scale, treatment group is significantly better in cheek blowing, showing teeth, whistling and lowering underlip than control group after treatment (P<0.05)ConclusionTwo groups have effect on curative effect on Bell’s palsy during convalescence. The effects are the same. The treatment including grain-sized moxibustion on jing-well points of yangming channels and the conventional acupuncture has a better work in cheek blowing, showing teeth, whistling and lowering underlip, which shows synergy for Bell’s palsy.
