IntroductionColorectal carcinoma remains one of the most common malignancies tumors that represent a global health problem. It has previously been indicated that delayed diagnosis is the main reason for a poor prognosis. Over the past few decades, investigations have focus on the serum tumor markers. The aim of this study was to investigate tumor marker carbohydrate antigen724(CA724) in the serum of patients with colon and rectal carcinoma at various stages.Materials and MethodsSerum was collected from66patients with the colon carcinoma and67patients with the rectum carcinoma during2010to2013. The serum level of CA724was taken into the statistical analysis. CA724levels were measured in different groups according to site, clinical stages, gender, age and metastatic status of the patients. The statistics significance of differences among the groups was calculated by non-parametric statistics.ResultsWe analyses the two types of cancer as a single entity. The mean serum CA724values±SEM were11.89±3.49U/ml in colon carcinoma patients and6.17±1.64U/ml in rectum carcinoma patients, with no statistically significant difference. Further investigations indicated that the mean serum CA724concentrations±SEM in patients with early-and advance-stage were6.03±1.78U/ml and11.54±3.21U/ml, the differences between the two groups were not statistically significant. However, the differences between the CRC patient group with and that without distant metastasis was statistically significant (P=0.0005). To determine whether gender and age affect the results in colorectal carcinoma patients mentioned above, the differences in the serum CA724value was also assessed. The results shows that there were no significant difference between male and female patients (P=0.863). Furthermore, there were no significant difference between patients under50and above50(P=0.1852). In colon carcinoma patients, the differences among clinical stages, early-and advanced-stages, with and without metastasis (lymph node and distance), all have statistically significant. In rectum carcinoma patients, the differences among different clinical stages, between early-and advanced-stages, with and without metastasis (lymph node and distance), those are with on statistically significant. We also observed an opposite variation tendencies of CA724in the evolution of colon carcinoma and rectum carcinoma.Conclusion1. We demonstrated a close correlation between serum CA724levels and tumor migration in colon carcinoma.2. There are more clinical significance in colon carcinoma than that in rectum carcinoma when CA724as a serum tumor marker.3. The opposite tendency of CA724in the colon carcinoma and rectum carcinoma may show another proof that they are two different type of cancer.4. The evaluation of serum CA724levels, particularly in patients with colon carcinoma, maybe of monitoring and predictive value and may also assist in the development of treatment strategies for patients.
