ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to evaluate the different post-treatmentperiodontal status of palatally impacted canines and adjacent teeth treated by open-eruption technique and closed-eruption technique and the different periodontal statusof palatally impacted canines and adjacent teeth between quadrants with impactedcanines and contralateral quadrants with normally erupted canines after fixedappliance removal.MethodsThe subjects comprised30patients treated for unilateral palatally impactedmaxillary canines and examined3–6months after removal of the fixed appliance.TheGroup1comprised subjects treated by open technique (n=15) and Group2by closedtechnique(n=15). Post-treatment examination comprised periodontal and radiographicexamination. This experiment includes2parts. In Paper1,we compare Group1withGroup2in the periodontal indexes of palatally impacted canines and adjacentteeth. The difference of periodontal indexes between impacted side and contralateralside was compared in Paper2. ResultsIn Paper1,there were no significant intergroup differences with respect toperiodontal pocket depth or bone support. The mean time required to achieve eruptionof the impacted canine was5.45±1.39for group1, and7.59±1.99months for group2(P <0.01). The duration of treatment was29.07±4.56months for group1and32.31±2.75months for group2(P <0.05). In Paper2, the significant bone loss at thedistal contact point of the lateral incisor and the mesial contact point of the caninewas exhibited between impacted side and contralateral side. The BI of canines at thebuccal point and palatal point between impacted side and contralateral side hadsignificant difference. The PPD of lateral incisors at the distal buccal point, the distalpalatal point and the palatal point, canines at the mesial buccal point, the mesial palatalpoint and the the distal palatal point, and first premolars at the the mesial buccalpoint, the mesial palatal point between impacted side and contralateral side showedsignificant difference.ConclusionIt is concluded that the choice of surgical method is not associated with thepost-treatment periodontal status of palatally impacted canines and adjacent teeth. The canines and adjacent teeth of impacted side is worse than contrallateral side inpost-treatment periodontal status.
