ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to systematically observe and assess the effectiveness of apitherapy to chemotherapy side effects on malignant tumor patients, and to provide a method which is safe and effective to cancer.Method50patients are from the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. This was a non-randomized concurrent controlled trial. Patients of treatment group received apitherapy combined with chemotherapy. Patients of control group only received the chemotherapy treatment. We observed the WBC, hemoglobin, platelets, neutrophils and KPS score of patients at the beginning of each apitherapy (7days before chemotherapy), and10days,21days after chemotherapy. Adverse reactions of chemotherapy and apitherapy were observed and recorded. The incidence and arising time of apitoxin induced fever during acupuncture treatment, the amount of bees used in apitherapy were also recorded and analyzed. The data collected was analyzed by SPSS19.0statistical software.Results①There was no significant difference between treatment group and control group in terms of WBC, hemoglobin, platelet, neutrophil count at the beginning of each apitherapy (7days before chemotherapy, P<0.05). There were no significant difference in Demographic characteristics of the two group. However,10days after chemotherapy, the number of leukocytes, neutrophils cells, platelets decreased significantly compared with the control group,(P<0.05);21days after chemotherapy, the number of leukocytes, neutrophils, platelets recovered, there was no statistically significant difference compared with the beginning of chemotherapy (P>0.05). The number of neutrophils, platelets of the control group has no significant difference compared with control group (P>0.05), but white blood cells of the control group was significantly lower compared with the previous chemotherapy21days after chemotherapy (P<0.05); The WBC, neutrophil of the treatment group was significantly higher compared with the control groups10days and21days after chemotherapy,(P<0.05), The number of platelet in the control group was significantly higher compared with the control groups21days after chemotherapy (P<0.05); The number of hemoglobin were not statistically different compared with the control group or compared with itself (P>0.05) before and after chemotherapy.②There was no significantly difference in terms of KPS scores of the two groups before chemotherapy,(P>0.05). There was significantly difference between treatment group and control group10days after chemotherapy (P<0.05). There were no significant difference between the two group21days after chemotherapy (P>0.05);In treatment group, KPS score did not change significantly(P>0.05) before and after chemotherapy; In the control group, KPS score decreased significantly10days after chemotherapy (P<0.05), compared with the previous score at the beginning of chemotherapy,21days before chemotherapy, there were no significant difference between the KPS scores compared with the previous result (P>0.05).③The incidence of vomiting, diarrhea, constipation and other gastrointestinal reactions of cancer patients in the treatment group during chemotherapy was lower than the control group, but the difference was not statistically significant (P>0.05).④The main allergic reaction of patients after chemotherapy received bee acupuncture were fever, muscle aches, rubella, lymphadenopathy, local skin itching, swelling, pain; fever generated by apitoxin generally occurs6-10times after bee acupuncture,11-15times secondly, the amount of bee were used generally up to6-10,11-15secondly, the incidence of fever was76.0%. Conclusion ①Bee acupuncture can effectively antagonize chemotherapy-induced decrease of leukocyte, neutrophil, thrombocytopenia, promote them to repair.②Bee acupuncture therapy can be effective in preventing chemotherapy-induced decline in quality of life, reduce volatility of quality of life③The influence of bee acupuncture to adverse effects of gastrointestinal caused by chemotherapy was in unclear.④Allergic reactions of patients received Chemotherapy or bee acupuncture combined with chemotherapy were generally same but there were also some difference:the allergic symptoms and signs were consistent performance, but compared with the normal patients with pain syndrome, the incidence of fever was less, the fever-occuring time caused by bee acupuncture was later, the amount of bees use were more than the normal patients.
