ObjectiveBariatric surgery is the most efficacious procedure for eliciting weight loss in humans but results greatly vary depending on the procedure. We have adapted two bariatric surgical procedures commonly employed in human to a rat model. Then, begin to understand the mechanism of weight loss in obese groups of people. Our goal was to use young adult female standard (SD) rats to develop experimental model for Sleeve Gastrectomy (SG) and Gastric Banding (GB)MethodsYoung adult Standard female rats weighing (150to260gm) received Sleeve Gastrectomy (SG) and Gastric Banding (GB) and were accessed body weight, food intake, water intake over a2week period. Control rats received Sham surgical procedure only. Control rats were also accessed body weight, food intake and water intake over a2week period.ResultsMean body weight decreased in SG and GB rats over14days by13.95±1.38gm,44.9±4.59gm respectively. Mean food intake and water intake decreased in SG and GB rats over seven days by4.50±0.64gm,5.5±0.52ml,4.50±0.8gm,10±0ml respectively. Body weight gain during14days after the operation was less in Sleeve and Band group than the sham or control group (p=0.01&p=0.017) respectively. Food intake during seven days after operation was significantly less in sleeve group (p=0.004) than Band group (p=0.843).Food intake in band (p=0.843) group was not significantly change than the control group (p=0.03) during seven days of post-operative. Water intake during seven days after operation was significantly less in Sleeve and Band rats groups than control groups (p<0.01).Conclusion1. These results show that Sleeve Gastrectomy (SG) promotes weight loss in female rats. Sleeve Gastectomy (SG) reduced the volume and surface area of the stomach. The weight loss that does occur after Sleeve Gastrectomy (SG) is most often attributed to a restricted gastric volume and a shorter/smaller area of exposure of nutrients to the absorptive intestinal surface.2. Gastric Banding (GB) decreased body weight gain of rats by decreasing the amount of food intake because of the creation of a small gastric pouch. Small gastric pouch receive little amount of food at multiple time.
