Background: We investigated the prevalence of and risk factors for small airwayobstruction (SAO) among Chinese island residents to establish means to prevent andtreat SAO.Methods: From October17,2011to November1,2011, a total of2,873residentsaged.20years who lived on the Huangqi Peninsula of Fujian were recruited byrandom cluster sampling. They were asked to complete a Burden of Obstructive LungDisease (BOLD) questionnaire and underwent physical examinations and lungfunction evaluations. SAO was defined as a forced expiratory flow at50%of vitalcapacity, Vmax50%, of less than70%of predicted. Risk factors for SAO wereassessed from among demographic and anthropometric variables, blood chemistryresults, and questionnaire response items. Results: A total of216(7.52%) Chinese island residents were identified as havingSAO (95males;121females). Their survey and test results were compared with432age and sex-matched healthy controls (192males;240females) for SAO risk factors.Among numerous factors investigated, only diabetes mellitus (p=0.039), smokingindex (SI, p,0.001for SI.600), second hand smoke (p=0.002), and lack of regularexercise (p,0.001) were significant risk factors for SAO.And the history ofeducation, occupation, house type,BMI,hypertention, triglycerides, creatinine, uric acidwere not. Conclusions: Smoking index and second hand smoke were still risk factors forsmall airway obstruction, this paper proposes that diabetes is also a risk factor forsmall airway obstruction, therefore, for diabetes patients in addition to pay closeattention to its cardiovascular complications we should be paid attention to smallairway to.At the same time, this article also discover that the lack of exercise is also arisk factor for small airway obstruction, so we advocates strengthening exercise toreduce the occurrence of small airway obstruction, which play an important role in the prevention for COPD and bronchial asthma...
