ObjectiveTo investigate the current status and influencing factors of nurses’ moral distressand professional burnout in the intensive care unit, and analyze the correlationsamong them. The purpose is to make care adninistrators paid more attention to moraldistress and professional burnout of clinical nurses which supply the sciencebackground dates for improving the negative experiences nurses, stability nursinghuman resources and enhancing the quality of clinical care.MethodsA total number of206ICU nurses were recruited from June to August in2013by stratified random cluster sampling method from five grade-3class-A hospitals inNanChang. They were investigated with a self-designed demographic questionnaire,the Chinese version of Moral Distress Scale and the Nursing Burnout Scale.Results1、The total score of ICU nurses’ moral distress was (46.47±12.35) and thedimension score was respectively individual responsibility (10.69±3.23), not inpatients’ best interest (12.44±4.15), value conflict (18.82±5.58), damage patients’interest (4.53±1.03). There were significant differences on the score of moral distressin ICU nurses with different ages, nursing ages, professional title, post, establishment,marital status, first degree, finally degree and monthly revenue.2、The total score of ICU nurses’ professional burnout was (60.43±17.93) andthe dimension score was respectively emotional exhaustion (26.29±11.86),depersonalization (7.80±6.52), personal accomplishment (26.53±10.79). There weresignificant differences on the score of professional burnout in ICU nurses withdifferent ages, scheduling, first degree, finally degree and monthly revenue.3、Moral distress correlates with professional burnout in ICU nurses (r=0.260,P<0.01). There was a significant positive relation among nurses’ moral distress,emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and professional burnout, but negativerelationship between nurses’ moral distress and personal accomplishment was found significantly.4、 Multiple linear regression analysis showed that age, first degree, finallydegree and monthly revenue were influencing factors of professional burnout, whichcould explained20.4%of the variance. Additionally, the study also found thatdamage patients’interest was the main factor for nurse burnout.Conclusion1、The total score of ICU nurses’ moral distress was at the low level. The factorsaffecting ICU nurses’ moral distress were ages, nursing ages, professional title, post,establishment, marital status, first degree, finally degree and monthly revenue.2、The professional burnout ratte in the ICU nurses is63.10%, and the score of itwas at the high level. Compared with domestic and international norms, there isabove norms lever in this study. The factors affecting ICU nurses’ professionalburnout in ICU nurses with different ages, scheduling, first degree, finally degree andmonthly revenue.3、Moral distress correlates with professional burnout in ICU nurses. The moreserious moral distress, professional burnout is more obvious. There was a significantpositive relation among nurses’ moral distress, emotional exhaustion,depersonalization and professional burnout, but negative relationship between nurses’moral distress and personal accomplishment was found significantly.
