Objective The aim of this study is to explore the clinical characteristics ofulcerative colitis (UC) in recent years and to provide help for the diagnosis andtreatment of UC by analysis of the clinical data of198hospitalized patients with UC.Methods A total number of198UC patients hospitalized in the First AffiliatedHospital of Harbin Medical University from January2006to June2012were involvedin this study. All patients were first diagnosed and treated for UC. The firstpredisposing factors, general information of the patients, clinical features, characteristics of colonoscopy, laboratory tests results, pathological examinations andcurative effects of patients were analyzed. Results (1) There were the precipitating factors prior to the onset of UC58.1%ofpatients. The precipitating factors included improper eating46.08%, emotionalstress26.09%, excessive fatigue15.65%, intestinal infection9.57%and coldness2.61%.(2) Ratio of male to female in patients with UC was1:1.2. The disease of UCcould be suffered from at any age with a high peak age of30to59years old.(3) Thesystemic symptoms of UC patients included of weigh loss (33.84%), fever (11.61%)and anemia (20.71%). The gastrointestinal symptoms included of diarrhea (92.42%),abdominal pain (79.29%), mucous pus (44.95%) and tenesmus (35.86%).(4) Thelaboratory tests showed that WBC count of peripheral blood increased, neutrophilcount increased, platelet count elevated, Hemoglobin dropped, serum potassiumdecreased, C-creative protein increased, serum albumin decreased and erythrocytesedimentation rate accelerated in28.28%,56.57%,52.02%,41.20%,23.23%,13.64%,25.76%and22.73%of patients, respectively. The mild and moderate cases weremajority in this group of patients. The platelet counts elevated in patients of mild cases, moderate cases and severe cases orderly (P<0.05).(5) Under colonoscopy, multiple erosions or superficial ulcers, contact bleeding, congestion and edema werefound in80.30%,25.76%and72.22%of patients, respectively. The lesions werediffuse or continuous distributed in92.43%of cases.(6) Pathological observationshowed that there were inflammatory cell infiltration and exudation, chronic mucosalinflammation, adenomatous hyperplasia, tubular adenoma and atypical hyperplasia in40.61%,20.61%,16.36%,11.52%and9.70%of cases, respectively.(7) Lesions ofUC were located in the rectum and sigmoid colon, left colon, right colon, regionalcolon, the entire colon in41.92%,29.26%,2.02%,9.60%and20.20%of cases,respectively.(8)This group of patients with UC course of distribution: the course ofdisease is less than a month in15.15%, one month to one year in42.93%, more thanone year to five years in31.31%, more than5years to10years in7.07%, more than10years in3.54%.(9)The treatment ways in this group of patients mainly includedtwo methods of systemic and topical treatments. The drugs used for systemictreatment included aminosalicylic acid preparations, hormones, probiotics, antibioticsand traditional Chinese medicines. The aminosalicylic acid preparations, hormones, antibiotics, and traditional Chinese medicines were used in the patients of80.80%,33.84%,15.66%and20.20%for topical treatment. Due to the severity of the illness, the surgical treatment was performed in the3patients. Other5patients gave up thetreatment. The effective rate of internal medical treatment was69.70%, and the rate ofcomplete remission was25.76%.Conclusions (1) There were some incentive factors, including improper eating, emotional stress, excessive fatigue, intestinal infection and coldness, etc, before onsetof UC in the hospitalized patients with UC.(2)The disease of UC could be sufferedfrom at any age with a high peak age of30to59years old. Female UC patients werehigher in number than males.(3)The main gastrointestinal symptoms were diarrhea, abdominal pain and tenesmus. The systemic symptoms included weight loss, fever, anemia and so on.(4)Some of patients, WBC count of peripheral blood, neutrophilcount, platelet count, C-creative protein increased, erythrocyte sedimentation rateaccelerated, and hemoglobin, serum potassium and serum albumin decreased. There was positive relationship between platelet counts and the severity of the UC.(5)Thediffuse or continuous multiple erosions or superficial ulcers were the most commonfinds under colonoscopy. The inflammatory cell infiltration and exudation were themain pathological characteristics.(6)Lesions mostly occur in the rectum and sigmoidcolon inflammation, left colitis, full colitis, the common duration is within ayear.(7)The internal medical treatment is the mainly clinical therapy, which is basedon amino salicylic acid preparation combined with hormones, probiotics, antibioticsor traditional Chinese medicines. Symptoms in most of patients had been improved byinternal medical treatments.
