Objective: To investigate the effect of acute hypoxia on fasting plasma glucose. Methods: Thirty female Wistar rats were random divided into control group and hypoxiagroup after fed18weeks, then the hypoxia group was put into low-pressure oxygen chamberfor a week was analogous to the circumstance of5000m. Blood samaple was acquired fromabdominal aorta and separated it into the serum, the liver and skeletal muscle sample werequickly respectivly removed and fixed in10%formaldehyde solution. The fasting plasmaglucose were determined by glucometer, the level of insulin and glucagon in serum by ELISA,and the protein expression of glucose transporters1(GLUT1) and glucose transporters4(GLUT4) with the method of immunohistochemical. Results: The fasting plasma glucose levels of hypoxia group showed a significant stepwiselowered (F=25.8,P=0.001);Comparison with control group, the fasting plasma glucoselevels, the weight and the insulin levels were significantly decreased (P<0.001, P=0.001,P<0.05). The expression level of GLUT1in liver was significantly increased (P<0.001),while the glucagon levels and the expression levels of GLUT4in skeletal muscle wereunaffected significant in hypoxia group (P>0.05). There were negative correlation of thefasting plasma glucose levels with the insulin sensitivity and the expression levels of GLUT1.The regression analysis indicates that the fasting plasma glucose was influenced by the serumlevel of insulin in serum and the insulin sensitivity. Conclusion: The results indicate that the fasting plasma glucose was influenced by thestress of acute hypoxia. It may induce a response of factors regulating glucose metabolism.
