Objective: This study was designed to detect the expression of macrophage migrationinhibitory factor(MIF) in the esophageal carcinoma (EC) tissues, and to investigate therelationship between MIF and the clinical and pathological parameters.Materials and methods: Samples were collected from Ningxia Medical UniversityGeneral Hospital, surgical resection and archived from2009to2011.The expression of MIFin EC(40cases)and adjacent tissues (17cases) were examined by immunohistochemicalstreptavidin-perosidase (S-P).Results: The positive expression of MIF in EC group was significantly higher than thegroup of adjacent tissues. The difference was statistically significant (P<0.05);MIF expressionwith age, gender, ethnicity, smoking, drinking, Hp infection, body mass index (BMI), as wellas tumor location, tumor diameter, pathological type, differentiation degree were nosignificant correlation (P>0.05),but related to tumor infiltration range, lymph nodemetastasis, distant metastasis and TNM stage (P <0.05).Conclusion: MIF is highly expressed in esophageal carcinoma, related to TNM stage, infiltration range, lymph node metastasis and distant metastasis. MIF can be used as andetection indicators to assess esophageal carcinogenesis in immunohistochemistry.
