A Study Of The Efficacy And Safety Of Pneumatic Trabeculoplasty(PNT) In Primary Open Angle Glaucoma And Ocular Hypertension

Objective To study the efficacy and the safety of patients with primaryopen angle glaucoma (POAG) and ocular hypertension(OHT) treated by pneumatictrabeculoplasty (PNT)Methods30eyes (21Patients) of primary open angle glaucoma and ocularhypertension in Ningxia Eye Hospital underwent comprehensive ophthalmologic examinations which cloud the vision, the diopter, central cornea thickness, intr-aocular pressure(IOP)，slit lamp microscope, gonioscopy, fundus examination，opt-ical coherence tomography in optic disk and Humphrey visual field examinations.And all patients were treated with PNT Model1000(Ophthalmic International Inc)after signing the informed consent. In order to consolidate effect of lowing intra-ocular pressure, the repeated therapy was used on the seventh day after that.Theophthalmic examinations were repeated at1hour,1day,1week,2week,1month,2month and3month after fierst PNT therapy. Observe the IOP、complications andthe use of antiglaucoma medications etc.Results The IOP of pre-PNT was23.3±1.7mmHg， The IOP of1day,1week,2week,1month,2month and3month after PNT therapy were19.7±4.0mmHg、19.7±2.8mmHg、19.4±4.1mmHg、19.0±2.4mmHg、18.6±3.3mmHgand18.4±3.0mmHg, and the depression of IOP at each time has the statisticsignificant compare with bastic IOP at pre-PNT (P<0.001). The IOP depression of25eyes (83.3%) was more than15%.16eyes with antiglaucoma medication，a mean drop in IOP of3.9mmHg was observed on the third month after PNT compare withbastic IOP(P<0.001).And the kinds of medication requirements showed trend ofreduction.The results of this study demonstrated that the side effect of PNT weregenerally minor including conjuctive edema, sub-conjuctive hemorrhage, transientblurred vision and foreign body sensation.There are not obvious changings aboutthe best corrected visual acuity, retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and the visualfield mean defect （p＞0.05）.Conclusions This small sample study showed that PNT have a safety andefficacious effect to low the hypertension of primary open angle glaucoma andhypertensive patients. Especially to patients who needed many kinds of antiglauc-oma medications、 had bad compliance and could not accept laser and operation,PNT was a simple and noninvasive method to reduce IOP assistantly.
