Ancient Han Health Lotion (AHHL) is a kind of nourishing drug, and residues i n the AHHL can be used for the Herbivorous Animals as feedstuff. In order to effec tively use the residues and provide a basis for comprehensive utilization of them, the study was carried out to explore roles of the residues on animal functions through a fermentation treatment. The results were as follows:1 Fermentation treatment of the residues of Ancient Han Health Lotion (AHHL).The herb residues were fermented by grinding, sieving and addition of the mixed fermenting powders. Contents of the crude fibers, crude proteins and thallus were measured on 2D,3D,5D,7d and 9D during the fermentation. The results showed that contents of the crude fibers were reduced by 4.95%,9.99%,11.23% after 9 days of fermentation in comparison with the blank control group, the low-, middle-and the high-dosage group, respectively. In addition, contents of the proteins were increased by 2.44%,5.67%,6.38% and 7.76% respectively after 9 days of fermentation. There was a positive correlation between the fermented effect and addition of thallus.2 Acute toxicity test of the herb residues in miceThe acute toxicity test was carried out by an addition of the herb residues before and after fermentation. The results showed that the maximum concentration was 1.8g/mL, the maximum dosage was 0.4ml/10g, no mouse died during the whole experiment and there was no acute toxicity for the two kinds of dosage forms.3 Animal experimentsThe 60 Kunming mice were randomly divided into 6 groups (including the three groups of mice with the immunosuppression treatment by cyclophosphamide), each group was fed with the herb residues before or after fermentation or normal saline. The given indexes were determined after the continuous 30-day feeding. (1) Effect of the herb residues on weight of mice:The weight change and daily gain of the mice were measured for each group and the results showed that the rate of weight increase of the feeding-preparing group was increased compared with the control group. (2) Study on endurance of the mice:The endurance of mice was studied by determining the effect of the exhaustive swimming time, blood LDH, creatinine and urea nitrogen content to observe the endurance of mice. The results showed that contents of LDH in the blood were increased, but contents of serum creatinine and urea nitrogen were decreased, and the exhaustion time of the herb residues was prolonged. (3) Study on the liver function:The liver function was evaluated by measuring contents of the total protein, albumin and enzyme activity of ALT, AST and ALP. The results showed that there was an increase for contents of the total proteins and albumin and a decrease for activity of ALT, AST and ALP. (4) The effect of immune function of the mice:The immune function of the mice was evaluated by means of the immune organ index, contents of Hb, WBC, RBC, PLT and IL-2, or effect of the delayed allergy in mice. The results showed that the immune organ index and the delayed allergy in the herb residue-treated group were better, which were the best in the fermented group when compared with the other two groups. Contents of the RBC, Hb, WBC, PLT and IL-2 in the bloods were increased, but difference was not obvious for the contents of RBC, Hb, WBC and PLT, and there was no difference for the enzyme activity in ALT, AST and ALP between the tested group and the control group. The above results showed that the nutritional value of the herb residues was higher after fermentation treatment, contents of the crude proteins in each treated group were increased (an increase by 7.76% for the high dosage group). The related indexes such as body weight, anti-fatigue ability and liver protection can be enhanced to a certain extent after fermentation, especially those in the group fed with the herb residues after fermentation treatment.
