This study describes the biological and ecological characteristics, seed germination, cutting propagation and cutting orchard construction for Ternstroemia gymnanther(Wight et Arn.) Sprague. The observation and test results are as follows:T. gymnanther, belonging to family Theaceae, is an evergreen arbor species. Its leafbuds emerged in March and differentiate in April. The full-bloom stage was in May, lasting for 15-20 days. The flowers dropped in June and July, after that, the fruits begin to grow and last for 50 days. The fruits changed to red in September and split in October.T. gymnanther liked the wet, fertile and acid soil, likes sunlight with shade-tolerance. It grew slowly with poor sprouting ability. It was tolerant to CO2, chlorine and hydrogen fluoride. The light was good for seed germination of T. gymnanther and the optimal light condition is 1000 Lx. The optimal temperate for seed germination was 24 ℃, providing highest germination rate. The optimal sand storage lasting time was 120 days, providing more 89.33% germination rate than that without sand storage. The plant grow regulator played most important role on the survival rate in the cutting propagation. The result of orthogonal test showed 100 mg?L-1 ABT1 processing scions for 10 minutes is the best for cutting scion treatment. The optimal treatment was not shown on the orthogonal Tab., but the test result indicated 500 mg?L-1 ABT1 processing scions for 10 minutes provided 92.67% survival rate. This method could be applied in the practice production. The time for T. gymnanther from sowing to emerge from the earth was 53 days. From May to October the seedling height and ground diameter grew fast, and stopped growing after November. Thin density was benefit to the seedling height and ground diameter growth. The scion orchard should be at the plain, good site condition and good facilities for watering and draining. New mother trees should be cut at the height of 60–70 cm in time. Pruning should be done in Spring. The trees were sprayed by 500 ppm ethylene to cause the fruits and flowers dropping. The shape of trees in the rebuild scion orchard should be kept as original. The watering interval for the orchard should increase. Tree times of fertilizing should be performed for one year. Four to five times of plough should be performed for one year.It was critical for the trees to be fertilized to increase the quality and quantity of scions. The trees were fertilized once in Mar and August, respectively. The highest quantity of scions was 1337 shoots per individual, which was higher than that of the contrast(no fertilized). The sprouts grew three times per year: spring, summer and autumn. The sprouts in Spring was vigorous, which was the best material for propagation. The ideal scions were obtained by fertilizing once in Mar and August respectively. The method of ground cutting on the trunk was the best to obtain the highest quantity of scions. The method of high position cutting on the trunk caused spindling and consumed plenty of nutrients, thus caused lack of nutrients in the coming year. The method of low position cutting on the trunk caused clump sprouts, whereas the single sprout was the best for obtaining the nutrients.
