In recent years, orchard industry has become an important way to develop rural economy and significantly increase level of local people’s income. Currently, most of the orchard mowing was completed by handwork or hand-hold self-propelled lawn mower, which increased labor intensity and operation risk. This would delay farming season, affecting fruit tree growth and fruit quality at the same time. As the agricultural structure adjustment, people paid an increasing amount of attention on development of orchard industry. The proportion of fruit tree planting and fruit production are increasing year by year. Therefore, with the deepening contradiction between inefficiency mowing and enlarged planting area, there are growing strong demands for orchard lawn mower. However, most of the existing mower machines are used for lawn mowing, and few are for orchard mowing. Moreover, domestic lawn mower types are less and imported ones are expensive which hindered promotion and using, thus retarding the progress of orchard planting mechanization.In order to remedy the situation, we developed applicable orchard self- propelled lawn mower to reduce the labor intensity and improve working efficiency.In this paper, we analyzed the orchard mowing technology background, significance and research status in domestic and overseas. From the orchard lawn mowing technology research status, we determined the structure of orchard self-propelled lawn mower according to technology needs of national conditions and the fruit tree horticulture by paying attention to the combination of agronomy and farm machinery. We analyzed and determined the lawn mower matching power, cutting speed, cutting length, the transmission form and the size of the cutter installation position and other parameters, and analyzed the pulley and shaft parts calculation, determined the design size of the belt wheel and axle, after reading relevant data. According to the whole machine structure design and calculated parameters, we made 3d design of the walking system, transmission system, control device and cutting device of orchard self-propelled lawn mower by the AIP software. Based on the finite element analysis software Ansys Workbench, we did the analysis, verification of key parts of the machine.After a field experiment on the lawn mower prototype and data analysis, the result of the self-propelled lawn mower in stubble cutting width utilization factor index, height evaluation index, cutting height stability, broken sloppy indicators and leak rate cut such as operation rate can satisfy the requirements of gardening design.Field experiment and operation results show that stable performance, good effect, high work efficiency, and whole machine design of the ride self-propelled mower meet the requirements of orchard grass mowing.
