Lodging is the main factor limitting the improvement of grain yield and quality of wheat. This research is mainly focused on the association between stem characteristics and wheat lodging resistance through analyzing the difference in lodging resistance across two cropping seasons. Our results helped to identifying and utilizing the wheat varieties with strong resistance to lodging during breeding.In this study, seven traits including fresh weight above ground, plant height and center of gravity of the ground height, stem breaking strength, yield strength, lignin content and 232 wheat genotypies were measured respectively during the two cropping seasons of 2013 and 2014. The contents of study included:(1) the correlation of the ground fresh weight plant height, the center of gravity height, stem breaking strength, yield strength with the lodging index among 232 of wheat variety resources; (2) the correlation of lignin content with the stem strength of 232 wheat varieties resources; (3) analysis of differences in lodging resistance among 232 wheat variety resources and further identification of variety resources with strong lodging resistance. The main results were as follows:1. Wheat ground fresh weight, plant height and center of gravity height had a significantly positive correlation with lodging index, which the correlation coefficiences were 0.264**,0.540** and 0.549** respectively. Stem breaking strength and stem strength showed a significant negative correlation with the lodging index, carrying the correlation coefficient-0.721** and-0.486** respectively.2. Lignin content had no significant correlation with activity of stem strength. The results showed that the lignin content is not the key factor influencing the intensity of stem in this research.3. The cluster analysis of wheat stem strength was performed among 232 varieties using the sum of squared residuals method. And the results showed that these wheat germplasms could be divided into four groups based on the stems lodging resistance. According to the result of clustering analysis, everal wheat genotypies with strong resistance to lodging were selected, such as Wanmai 38、Jimai19、Annong1025、 Annong1103、Jimai20、E158、Xumai270、Jinan17、Huaimai0208、and BainongAikang58 and so on.
