Recent years, accompanying with the rapid economic growth in China, urban landscaping and gardening business developed very qiuckly and born the industry of landscape design. Landscape plants, as an important element of modern landscape layout, become more and more important in light of their ecological and ornamental roles. Many crop species are applied in landscape design in the process of development. In terms of plant species, not only land races of trees, but also foreign varieties adapted to the region are used. The range of species span across arbor, shrub, ground cover, water plants, ornamental grasses, perennial root flowers and biennial flowers. Environmental deterioration of metropolis give rise of more and more city residents who long for a countryside life. Therefore, the landscape designers intend to integrate a variety of ornamental vegetables, field crops into their designs. As successful examples are agricultural sightseeing gardens, ecological leisure farms, agricultural sightseeing picking gardens, the incorporation of farmland on campus of Ha-Er-Bin Agricultural University, rapeseed flowers on Xiangshan Campus of The China Academy of Art. All these examples showed not only landscape benefit, but also ecological and social benefits. Some researchers in China investigated the application and arrangement of agro-crops in landscape design and have some achievements.This thesis defines the so-called ornamental crops, and classifies ornamental crops into different categories. Some foreign and domestic cases practicing the incorporation of the field crops in landscape design were studied. Emphases were given on the practices in Hangzhou City, in particular, the arrangement of ornamental crops in the Eight Diagrams Field, with details in plant species selection, crop type allocations and so on. The practice in the Eight Diagrams Field can hopefully serve as a reference for further extension of similar landscape construction.
