Higher education is closely related to the urban development, they are mutual promotion and restriction. Throughout the domestic and foreign present situation and the developing trend of the higher education and city, with more attention paid to the close relationship, More and more experts and scholars think the influence factors in the development of higher education plays a great role in the city development strategy. So the correlation analysis for the development of higher education and the urban, can promote the development of higher education and the urban competitiveness, and provide more social benefit and economic benefit for higher education and the city, which in the development of the bidirectional interaction. The theoretical research and empirical research method used in this paper, summarized the development of higher education level and the urban competitiveness of domestic and foreign related research through the theoretical study. From the vertical and horizontal perspective, the interactive mechanism, correlation analysis, empirical analysis and implementation mechanisms, etc are reviewed. Especially the interactive study of higher education and urban development, extracted the development of higher education and city interaction theory from past research results, and mainly analyzing the two-way interaction between higher education and urban development effect and mechanism. Firstly, presented the date to quantify the correlation between higher education development and urban competitiveness, with the example of two private university rankings in China, analysed the main factor on relevant indicators. Secondly, in the higher education development level and the urban competitiveness of the empirical analysis, respectively, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Hefei, Xi’an and Chengdu, take the coefficient of correlation analysis and regression analysis for the six major cities in these three areas. The main conclusions in this paper are:firstly, extracted two common factor in the higher education of the six main factor analysis urban competitiveness, The higher education scale factor and the higher education input factor, the increase of the higher education investment not only provided the scale effect of the output in higher education, but also promote the joint effect of urban development. Secondly, with the increasing of the index value of higher education, the city’s economic is developing, It’s indicates that the development of higher education is helpful to the development of urban economy. In correlation analysis and regression analysis, the higher education development and the urban competitiveness existed correlation from the study, but the correlation cannot treat as same, it’s should according to the specific situation. Thirdly, there is a significant relationship between the higher education and urban development, from the six cities in east and western regions, urban economy plays an important role in the development of higher education, the higher education is mainly restricted by the economic development level, the difference of changes should be consistent with the change of economic, also a high level of higher education, in turn, promote the development of urban economy. The fourth, There are regional differences factor between the higher education. From the six cities of regional distribution, the Midwest urban competitiveness of higher education is not high in overall level.but the eastern city have a ascending trend, because of the economic development of the advantages of the competitiveness of higher education. The question is how much of the higher education input, it’s correlation with and urban economic power.
