Urbanization is an inevitable trend in economic development all over the world. It’s aprocess of reforms in the rural society. It has a great effect on how China is transformed from anagricultural nation to an industrialized and modernized power, and it restricts the solution ofissues concerning agriculture, countryside and farmers, and to a certain degree determines theconstruction of an all-around well-off society with Chinese characteristics. There is no fixedpattern for us to borrow and it has to be found in practice. Rigid uniformity should be abandonedand the new situation should be taken into account. A way with Chinese characteristics is to befound to help the steady development of urbanization. In this essay, the author approachesurbanization by reviewing its definition given by China and other countries, and reviews theachievements obtained from its five stages: initiation, fluctuation, stagnation, development andstability. Since the reform and opening up, great achievements have been obtained, such as theoptimization of industrial structure adjustment and resource allocation, the coordination of ruraland urban development, the urban system based on the development of small towns and so on. Inspite of these achievements, there are some serious problems in the development of urbanization, such as scattered township enterprises, weak infrastructure and serious environmental pollutionand so on, which attribute to the poor urban planning, the lack of construction funds and theneglect of ecological environment protection. Urbanization is not simply a problem ofinhabitation, but also a middle stage from agricultural society to upper layer urban society andthere will be something to follow. This essay analyzes the problems during current urbanizationof China, draws lessons from several well-known urbanization models, including south Jiangsuurbanization model which emphasizes small towns, Zhujiang urbanization model whichemphasizes foreign investment, Wenzhou model which focuses on private capital etc. The essayalso studies the urbanization model of backward areas in developing countries of Africa andLatin America, the urbanization model of developed countries such as Germany and Francewhich holds that government regulations should be prior to market economic development, andmodels of highly developed countries such as America which imposes few restrictions onurbanization process. By probing into the current urbanization strategies with Chinesecharacteristics, this essay attempts to establish development system of multi-mechanismurbanization. In the new development system, the government transforms its functions, formulates a scientific and feasible town planning, reforms household registration managementsystem and promotes the free movement of labor in order to improve the personal qualities ofrural people and to construct the ecological town, which produces a more rational and substantial development of China urbanization, promotes the socialist modernization, maintains socialequality and justice, and eliminates social risks. We can look forward a harmonious and well-offsociety with China Dream fully achieved. China urbanization will ultimately reach our scheduledgoal.
