Based on the statistics of the aircraft accidents over the past 40 years, when low-flying, 80 percent of the aircraft accidents are ground collisions. So, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has demanded all the commercial & transportation aircrafts to fly with Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) since 1975.The Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) helps keep pilots aware of the aircraft’s position relative to terrain. It provides a cockpit display of terrain near the aircraft, with the terrain color coded according to its elevation relative to the aircraft. The system also sounds an audible alert beginning about one minute or more in advance of a pending collision. Older Ground Proximity Warning Systems (GPWS), which EGPWS units replace, provide an average of about 10-15 seconds advance warning of a terrain encounterThis dissertation provides an instance of EGPWS design and realization. It makes a detailed introduction to the system design on data acquisition and processing, interaction between man and machine, hardware, software, etc. In reference to the related standards of RTCA & FAA, it analyses 5 warning modes of“Excessive Descent Rate”,“Excessive Closure to Terrain”,“Altitude Loss After Takeoff”,“Unsafe Terrain Clearance”and“Excessive Deviation Below Glide Slope”. It analyses these modes’trigger conditions, mathematical models and implementations. From the ends of ground and flight test activities, this dissertation has come to a conclusion that the developed EGPWS product based Y8 cargo platform has reached the world levels in quality and performance. The EGPWS technology and product have filled the country blank and contributed to the building-up of national aviation domain.
