Public road traffic system is an important infrastructure and service affecting people’s livelihood and social stability. With the rapid development of economy, marvelous changes have been made in China’s public road traffic sector. However, with the explosive growth of motor vehicles in recent years, the urban road traffic problems in China are getting worse,these problems, mainly including traffic congestion, traffic accident, car parking difficulty and environment pollution, etc. are awaiting to be solved.Urban traffic plane crossings, known as the nodes of urban traffic network and the "bottleneck" of entire traffic network, directly affect and impose restriction on the traffic efficiency and safety of the whole network, thus, strengthening the organization and management of traffic plane crossings will be of paramount importance to improve traffic capacity and driving safety of urban traffic network. This thesis presents study on optimized organization of urban traffic plane crossings on the ground of the aforesaid paramount importance.First, this thesis provides in-depth analysis on the fundamental causes of traffic chaos,accidents, inefficiency by taking traffic conflicts as target of the study. Second, a detailed analysis on how to separate traffic conflicts from perspective of time and space is provided. Spatial analysis focuses on crossing channelization, organization and management of left-turn traffic flow while time analysis focuses on traffic signal control.The specific measures taken in channelization of motor vehicles, non-motor vehicles and pedestrian flows at traffic crossing are elaborated and channelization of motor vehicle flows are highlighted with case study. Case study of single-point timing signal control that is most widely used is provided in the analysis of crossing traffic signal control.In-depth analysis is also made in determining reasonable signal phase, phase sequence and signal timing parameters according to the actual traffic flow at traffic crossing. The study of optimized organization of left-turn traffic flow covers analysis of four measures i.e.left-turn lane, left-turn waiting zone, No left-turn zone and far leading crossing, each being given with design basis, condition and specific approach. The thesis aims to provide a certain guidance to the theory and application of the organization and management of traffic plane crossings.
