In order to reduce the accident rate and improve the safety of elevator, a specialized system based on the Internet of things, which is able to remotely monitor an elevator’s status and remotely control the elevator’s movement, is designed and implemented in this paper. The most important feature of the system is that it is capable of monitoring many elevators simultaneously, like elevators in a community or in a big hotel, and immediately rescuing the trapped ones if needed from anywhere in the world as long as the Internet connection is available. That promptness could avoid a heavy casualty. The attendance management function is included in the system. The government regulators could login the system to check whether the elevator is kept well or not by searching the elevators’ fault record and the attendance record of maintenance fitter. This supervision function will play a positive role in improving elevator’s safety.The proposed system is based on a new method of elevator status monitoring and control and it is composed by four components: elevator status monitoring and control board, server software, and client software and management platform. The board will determine whether there is a fault in an elevator by analyzing the status relays’ signal. This fault detection method requires no more sensors who will probably make a bad effect on elevator, which means it will do no harm to an elevator. The board controls the elevator’s movement by switching on or off the controlling relay’s circuit loop. The client software sends an instruction to the board to realize the remote control of an elevator with the help of server software. The board sends an elevator’s fault information and elevator’s status data to the client with the help of server software to realize the remote monitoring and alarm of elevator’s fault. A built-in intercom circuit on the board connects the board to the original intercom system of an elevator. The client software is connected to the new intercom system by means of the Internet. With that connection, people could talk to the trapped ones to relief them. Remote monitoring video could be watched with the help of professional video recorder.The main works in this paper include the design and implementation of elevator status monitoring and control board, terminal software, client software and management platform. Special fault recognition algorithm is designed in terminal software to find the fault of an elevator intelligently. In order to make the remote elevator movement control safer, a specialized inching algorithm is designed in terminal software. Data processing algorithms are implemented in client software to process the received fault data and elevator’s status information. A lot of actual tests have been made and the results show that the system has achieved the proposed goals and it is stable. The system will have a good market application prospect.
