Buried pipes is one of the city’s major infrastructure, it has a pivotal position. However,buried pipes leak problem has been restricting the development of the city and improving the health of people’s lives. So, you want to control and reduce the leakage rate of buried pipes, it must be able to carry out underground water pipe leak detection and location. The core technology is the detection and localization time synchronization technology. Its design and application of wireless sensor networks are critical to the above reasons, the need to synchronize the wireless sensor network protocol used in buried pipe network in order to achieve the detection and precise location of the leak point.This paper studies the TPSN time synchronization algorithm with the related method of leak detection technology, and analyses the root cause of errors. It proposes a modified TPSN algorithm based on least square method, which aims to further reduce the error in time and improve the time synchronization accuracy. Meanwhile, it makes a research about the MAC layer in ZigBee, then supposes a optimization scheme who changing the random backoff period before CCA into fixed backoff period, and its feasibility has been verified. Finally, it does modifications for Z-Stack protocol stacks’ network layer and application layer on the ZIGBEE module, and realizes the network coordinator, ports, and cluster registration, the indirect binding endpoint bindings and coordinator, recording time information, after those the improved TPSN algorithm based on least square method achieved.Finally, the simulation is made on different pipe lengths respectively, such as 100 m,150 m and 200 m. The test shows that this algorithm meets the requirements on the positioningaccuracy who less than or equal to ±1m while the timing error who less than or equal to±384us.
