Reinforced concrete frame is one of the most popular structures with lots of advantages. However, the lateral stiffness of RC frames is very small, so it has poor deformability and anti-seismic behavior. The situation could be worse for aging buildings, weak parts of the structure, function alteration, building disasters, etc. With the extensive use of reinforcement technology, improving the working performance of frames by adopting proper strengthening scheme is an efficient and cost-effective approach. In related study for now, many strengthened members’ behavior has been researched. Reinforce design usually strengthen structures by increasing the bearing capacity of beams or columns in practical projects. However, there is few study in changes of integrality performances and un-improved parts. It is worthy to learn the changing rules of steel-bonded frames because an ideal structure usually acts well in a whole. In this article, specific finite element software Perform-3D is used to study properties of 38 RC frames before and after steel plate strengthening from two different groups. The main contents of this paper are as follows.(1) Use appropriate material constitutive relations to simulate two single cross frames under low cycle reciprocating loading experiment. Verified modal correctness by comparing the simulated result and experimental data.(2) Used PKPM to arrange reinforcing bars and find out weak story of the structure. Take weak story as the main strengthening story. Compared analysis results of unimproved frames in ETABS and Perform-3D to verify the correctness of Perform-3D models.(3) Designed two diverse study groups of RC frames. Adopted 18 kinds of reinforcing schemes considering differences in scope of reinforcement in one story, amount of strengthened stories and steel plates for single member. Ran response spectrum analysis and pushover analysis. Then comparing modal results, story drifts and shearing forces, static elasto-plastic F-D curves, target displacement of all the structures. Finally evaluated the frame performance from overall level and component level.Steel plate bonding of beams or columns can improve deformation ability of the structure to some extent. Drifts of strengthened weak story and the adjacent story reduced obviously. However, stories far away from strengthened weak story ended up with increasing deformation, and the weakest part may be transfer to other place. To make structures work better, the characteristics of original frames have to take into account when designing disposal of strengthened members, amount of reinforced stories and steel plates. This paper will show the changing regularities of performance on strengthening frames, which can provide reference in practical engineering.
