| War,with any request of territorial expansion,national independence or revolution,has been with the whole history of mankind progress. Its massive destruction and bloody brutality pose a torture to the people involved. People hate wars and long for peace and harmonious life. After the second world wars in the 20 th century,the prosperity of economy and commerce and development of science and technology have resulted in accelerated exchange between states and nations and the globalization. People come to realize that peace and development are the theme of world community. However,war has never gone away. In order to warn people against the war and prevent its reoccurrence,people with insight have made efforts, one of which is war memorial square.War memorial square is among the important city squares,which not only offers the values in commemoration,education and warning but also beautifies the city surroundings and brings economical outcome as a tourist landscape. As a consequence,a number of landscape architectures of war memorials have been designed and built,such as National World War II Memorial of the United States, World War II Victory Monument of Russia and Jewish Holocaust Memorial Hall Israel(Yad Vashem), etc. In China,similar memorial landscape architectures have been constructed since 1949,including Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall,Battle Memorial Square across the River,Huaihai Battle Memorial Square,Dr. Sun Yat-Sen’s Mausoleum,and the National Anthem Memorial Plaza,etc. In general, these memorial landscapes play an important role in grief,commemoration, keeping peace and stability,and even development of local economy. However there is no doubt that shortcoming still exists in either theoretical study or practical design and thus more efforts are needed in innovation and exploration,which is the focus of this dissertation.This dissertation first focuses on the study of war commemorative landscape architectures,and then comprehensively reviews and explores their status in terms of the theory and practice,design principles,creation techniques,existing problems and synthetic value. Relevant conclusions are drawn accordingly,which can provide guide for future design and development of war commemorative landscape architectures. Following the conclusions above,a case study is presented in the last part of this dissertation. This is about the design and practice of the memorial square landscape architecture of ’24-zig’ turns on Stilwell Road,demonstrating the value of research outcomes. The author suggests that the design and development of the landscape architecture of commemorative square need to respect the history reality, local tradition and circumstance,and then concentrate on originality,environmental harmony and value exploration. Limited by the author’s knowledge and expertise, the depth and extension of this present dissertation can be improved with peers advices and comments. Meanwhile the author wishes more creative ideas and similar work in this subject in the near future. |
