Feature and structure of a city is the product of historic development. From the very beginning until now, a city is always changing, more or less, in civilization and technology. And with dynasties passing, urban renewal starts to have a silent influence on people ‘s lifestyle, which is a mutual process. Old city contains heritage from the former generations, and urban reform represents acceptance and adaption to a new kind of life.Old city reform isn’t about abandoning tradition and following modern patterns once and for all, it’s supposed to be based on a more humanized premise, where we preserve and inherit the traditional architecture and lifestyle at the same time. And there are various methods, such as limiting building height and coloring; unifying architectural style and preserving living pattern. For a national historic and cultural city like Xi’an, to reform old city takes not only reconstruction, but also emphasizing the spiritual core of the city. This is why the reform strategy must be established on two aspects, one of which is the new shape of the old city, and the other is the humane spirits and territorial features. Specificly in the project of Shantytown Reconstruction in Shuncheng Lane,Lianhu District, Xi’an, the problems must be solved according to the general circumstance of Xi’an.
