Abstract/Summary:
With the development of information technology and digital technology, the traditionalmain control room has been progressively replaced by the digital main control room.At the same time, operators are in a transition from controllerstosupervisors, but it’s inherently difficult for the operators to monitor and control. In order to keep the system safe and stable, they have to supervise hundreds of devices or parameters, and keep devices or parameters operating within the normal pattern. When an anomaly occurs, the operatorsmust respond quickly before the severity of the problem escalates. To avoid or reduce losses, it is of essence to seize the problem before it disrupts the stability of the system. This study is to explore whether the predictive display can help operators detect and correctly diagnose an anomaly in advance, and improve the performance of operators.Generally there are two distinctive monitoring strategies. In routine time, operators may choose to be alerted and react to problems through the alarms, which is called reactive monitoring. Inversely, proactive monitoring means that operators seize an anomaly before it indeed occurs and take actions. Predictive display is an effective way to make proactive monitoring true. A series of literature review was conducted to figure out that both theaccuracyof predictive information and the representation have an impact on the design of predictive display.Predictive information with higher accuracy can improve operators’ performance and situation awareness, and decrease operators’ workload. If the accuracy is lower than 71%, that may weaken operators’ performance against traditional display.Integrated interface is considered to improve operators’ performance in monitoring tasks. However increasing information density would raise operators’ workload. So it’s absolutely essential to investigate the effects ofthe accuracyandrepresentation of predictiveinformation on operators’ performance, situation awareness and workload. The results indicate that compared to traditional display, the predictive display can significantly reduce the time to detect anomaly and the number of triggered alerts. Considering the accuracy of predictive information, higher accuracy cannot improve operators’ performance significantly for the tasks with lower task complexity. In addition, the time and cost to get the predictive information should be taken in account. In term of the representation of predictive information, operators’ monitoring strategy should be considered, and operatorscould gain benefits in monitoring tasks from an appropriate interface design.
