Study On The Gray Space Of Urban Parks Inmountain Areas In Chongqing

As one of the organic parts of park, gray space plays a transitional role in major space environment. It not only enriches space diversity and inherits the function of keeping landscape order, but also becomes the favorite lingering place for visitors.Recently it started to draw people’s attention. China is a mountainous country with wide-spread urban parks in mountain areas. Most of those parks are built down the hillside and share unique mountainous environment and landscape created by special terrain and climate condition. Despite limitation and challenges in construction, the unique features also create a good condition for creating the characteristics space and lay a good foundation for the design of gray space.Unfortunately, insufficient attentions have been paid to gray space in construction of urban parks in mountain areas by people. Gray space exists in park in certain number and some of which are good examples, but generally the space form is simple and the environment quality is undesirable; resting function for tourists gains insufficient attention, which causes space waste and low using rate. Some gray space even becomes dead corner for visitors, which seriously affects interval space landscape environment of urban parks in mountain areas. Therefore research on subjects of how to design and improve gray space of urban parks in mountain areas,strengthen relations with other major spaces of the park and meet resting needs of visitors has become an urgent topic to be studied.By taking gray space of urban parks in mountain areas as the research object and referring relevant theory and literature at home and abroad, gray space of urban parks in mountain areas has been clarified in the paper, as well as analysis and summary of space feature as adaptability, three dimensional, medium, vagueness, dependence,fringe, affinity and type of gray space and their relevance to recreational behavior bycombining the theories of architecture, environmental psychology, environment behavior studies and mountain urbanology. Furthermore, regular principles in gray space of urban parks in mountain areas are specified, such as principles of integrity,function, feature and humanization.Second, site survey to the six representative parks in urban area of Chongqing such as Beibei Park, Shimen Park, Hongensi Park, Eling Park, Pipashan Park,Longtousi Park which are conducted on the basis of theory research to analyze function, limitation and landscape feature of different gray spaces in parks and all types of recreational behaviorin the park. Besides, based on above general principles towards design of urban parks in mountain areas, problems exist in gray space are analyzed and summarized on aspects of integrity, functionality, characteristic and humanization.At last, on the basis of theory research and site survey, overall strategy, function strategy, characteristic strategy, humanization strategy and design strategy to space structure towards gray space design in urban parks in mountain areas are put forward to reference in further plan, construction and transformation on gray space of urban parks in mountain areas, enabling designer to create more gray space with mountainous features to meet the recreational behavior of visitors according to the environment.
