The main data of trunk road network traffic survey system comes from traffic survey station. The purpose of traffic survey station layout is to reflect not only the macroscopic traffic flow characteristics but also the operational characteristics and quality of the entire road network. At the same time, it also provides travel information service for the public.Rational distribution of traffic survey stations can help improve the quality of observational data, avoid data redundancy and implement function of survey stations ultimately, which is quite essential.The important role that spatial information plays in transportation plan naturally leads to the application of GIS in this area. The efficiency and scientific rationality of transportation plan and control can be significantly improved via specialized spatial analysis. In this paper, guided by "National Highway Network Traffic Observation Site Layout Planning", based on traffic flow theory and traffic engineering theory, traffic survey station layout is researched via GIS spatial analysis, GIS network analysis, statistical methods and matrix theory.Firstly, based on the theory that the segment which has traffic survey station can represent the one which has the similar traffic numbers and traffic volume variation law, the "two-stage" macroscopic layout method is researched as well as traffic survey station layout method based on OD estimation method. With the analysis of the characteristics and the similarities and differences between the two methods, provincial highway network traffic survey station layout methods and ideas is proposed. Applicability of this method in general national and provincial trunk highway network is also involved in this paper.Subsequently, the evaluation method of traffic survey station layout is studied, and then comprehensive evaluation index system can be developed a comprehensive evaluation system. Based on the research of various types of comprehensive evaluations, principal component analysis and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation are combined as traffic survey station layout or the status quo evaluation methods.Finally, taking traffic flow data of Jiongsu Province highway network in 2012 as example, layout method is verified by using ArcGIS software, which can prove the feasibility.
