The historical process of fast urbanization in China has realized rapid expansion of urban space and mass gathering of urban population. However, a series of "big city disease" followed, such as traffic congestion, environmental deterioration and Social differentiation, which reflected the imbalance of urbanization spatial structure in metropolitan. How to transform development pattern from extensive expansion into connotative promotion and how to improve the performance of urban spatial structure has become a major issue with the deepening of urbanization entering a crucial period of development. Compact city is one of the important theories to promote sustainable urban development. Researches on compact city theory and compact urban spatial structure contribute to the understanding of cities and their problems.Therefore, this paper aims big cities and selected Shijiazhuang as a demonstration case. This paper utilises the compact structure of urban space as an entry point to build the Urban Spatial Measurement Indicator System compact Connotations; using ArcGIS for spatial analysis and SPSS software for compactness cluster analysis. Through quantitative measurement and spatial analysis of the compactness of urban spatial structure, revealing the characteristics and problems of urban spatial structure, providing equitable land use direction and optimization measures for Shijiazhuang.Thesis is organized into six chapters:The first chapter introduces the background, significance, methods, ideas and research framework. The second chapter mainly explains the concept of the compact city and the research survey of domestic and international compact city, focusing on the connotation of the compact city. The third chapter conducts the compactness indices as well as the index calculation and spatial analysis tools of urban spatial structure. The fourth chapter introduces the progress of Shijiazhuang’s urban space and measures the urban compactness level of Shijiazhuang using spatial analysis tools in the three aspects, density, structure coordination degree and facility proximity, and summarizes the overall compactness features. The fifth chapter brings forward optimization methods and strategies for Shijiazhuang. The sixth chapter summaries this article and proposes further research prospects.
