With the growing concern for ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) by people and the important role of EV (Electric Vehicle) in environmental protection, researches of electric ATVs will get attention of enterprises, research institutes. In this paper, based on Solid Works and ADAMS softwares, structure improvement and related theory analysis are worked on the existing ATV by VPT (Virtual Prototyping Technology). Through a series of simulation experiments, the design & optimization of special chassis on 4WID (4-Wheel-Independent-Drive) ATV is completed) and laid a foundation of further research in the special chassis.The main content researched in this paper is followed as below:(1) The ATV and 4WID technology are simply introduced, and the research background and research significance are illustrated. Then, the domestic and foreign enterprises, universities and research institutions’present research situation and progress in ATV technology and special chassis on 4WID are discussed in detail.(2) The existing traditional ATV with internal combustion engine is redesigned, and the structure of automobile chassis and the suspension system classification are described detailedly. Through the surveying and mapping, the technical parameters are determined and the 3D models of the front suspension, rear suspension, steering system, frame and the whole vehicle are established.(3) The three-dimensional models of the front double-wishbone suspension and rear trailing arm suspension are imported into ADAMS/View to do road simulation tests. Through the analysis on the time-varying characteristic curves of kingpin inclination, kingpin inclination, camber, toe-other location, lateral wheel slip, the spring force and deformation, the hard points parameters are analyzed and optimized, to effectively improve the ATV suspension performance of the system. Meanwhile, according to the special road traffic of ATV, special simulation tests are carried out to verify the design and optimization are reasonable.(4) The vehicle virtual prototype is established by ADAMS/Car module and three different chassis layout experimental schemes are proposed. Through the handling stability analysis and comprehensive analysis of various aspects including the lateral acceleration and yaw rate, a reasonable battery chassis layout scheme is demonstrated.
