Recently, RSU-assisted Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) have drawn lots of research interest from the academic communities and industry. In order to improve the performance of VANETs further, as well as the efficiency of Road Side Unit (RSU), the traditional researches focused on the deployment of the RSUs to improve the network connectivity and reduce the communication latency. In the RSU-assisted VANETs, the properly deployed RSUs can greatly improve network performance. Meanwhile, adjusting the communication ranges of the RSUs according to the changeable traffic volume can facilitate communication and reduce communication energy better, which will promote the green communication application. Finally, with the proper message propagation algorithm, the RSUs can be used to optimize the network performance. Therefore, combining the RSU deployment scheme with the power control method and message propagation algorithm to improve the performance of VANETs is expected to play a more important role in the research of the VANETs technology. In this paper, we firstly studied the vehicle characteristics in the highway scenario and analyzed the effect of the RSU deployment on the network performance. Then we proposed the traffic-aware power control method based on the analysis of the effect with the changeable traffic volume on the network performance and the effect of the communication range on the energy consumption. Finally, the Data-Driven Message Propagation (DDMP) algorithm was proposed based on the vehicle characteristics to further improve the network performance. The main contributions of this dissertation are as follows:(1) We proposed the cluster-based vehicle management to research the vehicle characteristic in the highway scenario with the queuing and probability theory. Through the extensive experiments, we find out that the proposed scheme is more accurate than some benchmark algorithm.(2) After studying the vehicle characteristics, we analyzed the effect of the RSU deployment on the network performance and proposed the Cluster-based RSU Deployment to improve the network performance.(3) As the traffic volume changes at times in VANETs, the changeable traffic volume has a deep effect on the network performance. So it is of great importance to dynamically adjust transmission range to improve network performance and reduce energy consumption. In this paper, we proposed the Traffic-Aware Power Control method to balance the network performance and energy consumption.(4) In order to improve the network performance further and improve the utilization of the RSUs, we proposed the Data-Driven Message Propagation (DDMP) algorithm. In the DDMP algorithm, we adopted different strategies according to the size of data to reduce the transmission latency. Through the theoretical analysis and the extensive simulation, the DDMP algorithm was demonstrated to reduce network latency well.
