As an important part of the Intelligent Transport System(ITS),Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks(VANETs)provide Vehicle to Vehicle(V2V)and Vehicular to Infrastructure(V2I)communications by using short distance communication technology, which guarantee the basis for the implementation of application. However, the connection status of communication link between vehicles is different to be estimated due to the dynamic network topology, which provides an opportunity for attackers in VANETs and damages the network operation seriously. In order to ensure safety and efficiency of the message forwarding, and guarantee the services continuum and efficiency,it is necessary to protect the privacy and security of vehicles' message. Therefore, this work researches the message forwarding strategy with privacy and security protection in VANETs.Firstly, the architecture and typical application scenarios of VANETs are introduced,as well as the research hotspots. Then, the existing message forwarding mechanism, the privacy and security protection schemes are described. For the issues of vehicle privacy and message security,a socially aware security message forwarding strategy based on trust assessment is proposed. The pseudonym is used to protect the privacy of the vehicles, and the exchange entropy is as a measure to evaluate the exchange conditions of the pseudonym to avoid the continuous tracking of the vehicle by the attacker.Furthermore, according to the trust gradient, the message is forwarded in the form of multiple pieces of information to several relay vehicles and to the Application Provider(AP)through the Road Side Units(RSUs).To enhance message forwarding efficiency and communication security,a security message forwarding strategy based on friendliness evaluation is presented in this work. The vehicles' friendliness degree is evaluated by mutual friendliness degree and reference friendliness degree between vehicles, which is used as the basis of the clustering process. On the other hand, the vehicle's driving direction and driving speed are used as the foundation of grouping vehicles, and the cluster can be chosen by friendliness degree.Besides, the double key technology is used to encrypt the message, and more safely and efficiently forward the message. The analysis results show that the proposed strategies can effectively improve the success rate of message forwarding, reduce the risk of message leakage and the delay of message forwarding, enhance the stability of network and better protect the privacy of VANETs.
