Shanxi, with abundant resources and a profound culture, has a long history in China. The traditional settlements, just as the pearl throughout the history,never failed to attract our eyes. Qinhe, the second river in Shanxi province,devoted all its essence to the villages of middle Qinhe river valley. Here assemble more than thirty exquisite ancient villages, which has a relatively high research meaning and vlaue. These villages witnessed the vicissitude of Zelu merchants group, saw the discord times in the late Ming dynasty.Tuncheng village is the sixth batch of historical and cultural village in China. Built in the battle of Changping, Tuncheng had a history of two thousand years. The village’s reasonable site election, “based on the hill at the back and overlooking the river”, clear ship structure; orderly streets, well arranged“main road、alley、narrow lane”; considerate defense construction, “hard and soft defense“; unique folk house, the clarity of functionality, providing a reference material on today’s research of the villages in middle Qinhe river.The research of Tuncheng village,on the one hand, we begin with collecting all kinds of field date and official statistics. Based on the collect and collate of the village’s nature and geomorphology, historical development,cultural and economic, to make preparations for the deeper research of the village’s location, construction technology, settlement building features. On the other hand, depend on the planning, architecture research methods, using theoretical analysis, summary, general extraction and other methods, discussed the morphology of the village, building space,decorative art from macroscopically to microcosmically. The chapter of traditional settlement analyzed the site layout and texture. The chapter of traditional residences not only analyzed the form of buliding,but also used the method of typology todiscuss the different type of architectural space. The chapter of decorative art,investigated the achievement of the village’s decoration.Finally, based on the analyses above, the article discussed the protection and development methods that suited for the village, raised effective ways of preserving and developing the ancient settlements and provided reference information for future study.
