After 9/11, the attention on the issue of counter-terrorism has been globally attracted by the governments and scholars. In general, urban design improves the quality of public space, enhances spatial openness and beautifies the city’s image, which has some contradictions with the core security needs of counter-terrorism issues. Invisible security urban design is to meet people’s basic security needs certain circumstances, as much as possible to reach in shaping the image of urban public space and landscaping. It can be seen as an added dimension of urban design considerations.Invisible security urban design on urban design theory and methods have already some discussions and practices in the Western countries or cities. From the United States in Washington, led by NCUDSP urban design guidelines, to many cities, led by interface security design and street furnishing design, urban design with counter-terrorism has been practiced from different starting points in various aspects. In this paper, with the status and direction of historical development and design methods and theories of urban design, a comprehensive counter-terrorism and in-depth understanding of design techniques are reviewed based on analysis and comb through.This paper introduces from urban design strategy, perimeter security design, street landscape design and street furnishing design, one by one summarized and analyzed. At the end of the article, the paper tries to provide possible reference and inspiration for current China security urban design.
