The blind guiding system is a production of the development of modern science and technology. The assistive device can help the visully impaired people to travel alone and safely. But the existing research results failed to be popularized in real life for various reasons. The aim of this paper is to design a blind guiding product with good practicability, low cost, high performance, and the assistive device can really help majority of people who need to be guided.In order to realize the function of the blind guiding system, divided the system into two parts. One is used to get the obstacle informations in the moving direction obtained by the distance measurement technology. The other one is used to transmit the obstacle information to the user in the various ways. This paper mainly studies the related technologies of obstacle detection, and the distance measurement technology used in the detection of obstacles. Considering the size, the direction and the angle of the area which the pedestrian need to look out, we designed an obstacle detection method based on ultrasonic sensors, and completed the hardware and the software of the system.In this paper, three ultrasonic sensors are used to obtain the obstacle information in three directions. Two ultrasonic sensors are used to detect the obstacle in front. Divided the front area into three regions in the bound of the overlapping area of the detection range of these two sensors. The three regions are identified as the left front, the right front and the right in front. The traditional blind guiding system always ignores the effect of obstacles in head height to the visually impaired people. We add a sensor in the blind guiding system which is used to obtain the obstacle information in head height and help users to avoid suddenly hitting the upper hanging objects in the process of marching. The system has another practicable method which can reduce the cost of the product. The method is to process the multi obstacle informations with the decision alarm algorithm on the single chip microcomputer. Considering the previous alert information, the system transmits the result of the decision alarm algorithm to the user and provides a better user experience.The obstacle detection scheme in blind-guide system which design in this paper is a practical, high performance, low cost method. The blind guiding system can really help the majority of visually impaired people to have a safe and enjoyable travel.
