The rapid development of modern cities has been limited by many issues, such as,the fast-growing population, waste of resources, and lack of land for city construction.Under this circumstance, developing and utilizing underground spaces have been approved an efficient way in dealing with space issues. How to develop and utilize underground spaces fully and reasonably to build up a three-dimension modern city has become a great topic. A three-dimension modern city construction means to build the underground complex, and organizing the floor spaces and underground spaces organically. In this mode, the traffic issues will be relieved and the whole city will be segmented to many small parts due to the specific functions, like commercial districts and infrastructures. This mode has become an inevitable tendency for city construction.In the past, many transition spaces within underground complex have been treated as appurtenance, and as complementary for spaces and functions. However, these transition spaces will affect the environment and operation of the whole underground complex in some way directly. In real life, many of the transition spaces have been left out or closed due to some economical or operational reasons. In China, the designer of city construction often overlooks the transition spaces within the underground complex, so the transition spaces have not been fully developed and utilized; the research of the transition spaces within underground complex is still rare,not so many scholars have treated it as a specific research topic. Based on this situation, it is necessary to launch a research of designing and using these spaces within the underground complex.This article is based on a detail field research of transition spaces within the underground complex of Beijing City. With the results of this field research,summarizes and analyzes the existing problems to put forward some solutions and find out the practical importance of fully utilizing the transition spaces. Furthermore,summarizes the design strategy of transition spaces within the underground complex,provides reference for the reconstruction of the already built underground complex,and gives suggestions for new underground complex in building.The object of study of this article is the transition spaces within the underground complex of Beijing City. This article focuses on develop the function value of the transition spaces, starting with the basic concepts of underground complex and transition space, analyzing the success cases both from domestic and overseas.Through a research of the design and utilization of the transition spaces within the underground complex of Beijing City, the author summarizes and analyzes the existing problems, then gives a detail analysis of transition spaces within the underground complex, including but not limited to the formation mechanism, spatial type, and spatial pattern. Then the author summarizes the multiple function values of transition space within the underground complex, discusses each of the values in detail, and proposes the design strategy respectively. |
