In recent years, with the rapid increasing pressure on energy conservation, the scale of renewable energy power generation is expanding, which plays an important role on energy saving. However, the large-scale application of intermittent renewable energy generation also affects the grid safety and stability, so the vulnerability of power grid becomes increasingly serious. Once a major power blackout, it will greatly affects the socio-economic development and people’s daily life, even leads a threat to national security. Therefore, it becomes important to evaluate the power system vulnerability and take appropriate management measures to minimize systemic risks.Firstly, this paper gives a brief overview about vulnerability assessment theory on power grid, including relevant assessment methods. Secondly, it analyzes the impact of large-scale intermittent renewable energy generation on power grid. On this basis, the paper sets up the power grid vulnerability assessment index system scientifically from 5 aspects:environment, structure, equipment, technology, management. Thirdly, the paper improves the process of traditional analytic hierarchy (AHP), comprehensively integrate the improved AHP and rough sets method based on the principle of maximum entropy. At the same time, it applies the matter-element theory to establish the power grid vulnerability evaluation model. Finally, this paper gives empirical analysis of a power system, and shows the corresponding suggestions based on the evaluation results. The results demonstrate the effectiveness and practicality of vulnerability assessment model presented in this paper, it also has an important reference value on power grid vulnerability evaluation with renewable energy generation. This paper considers the impact of large-scale intermittent renewable energy generation on the grid vulnerability, applying the matter element theory to the grid vulnerability evaluation to set up the power grid vulnerability evaluation system scientifically, and it also verifies the practicality and effectiveness of the system through empirical research. Therefore, the construction of the grid vulnerability evaluation system provides an important reference for conducting the new research of grid vulnerability. It is not only the theory reference for other vulnerability evaluation projects, but also the decision making to prevent power grid blackout and improve the stability of power system operation.
