Research On Traffic Calming Measures And Its Evaluation In Urban Areas

The development of traffic and the increase of the number of motor vehicles lead to more and more difficulties for the non-motor vehicles and pedestrians in urban areas. At the same time, they also cause the increase of the traffic volume and speed of vehicles in streets and residential areas. The negative influences of vehicles in cities are becoming more and more serious. Traffic calming, as a kind of design concepts of reducing the negative influences of motor vehicles, has been applied maturely in Europe and America with good effects. However, the scale of the application of traffic calming in China is still relatively small.This thesis introduces the definition, scope of application and characteristics of various traffic calming measures, as well as their advantages and disadvantages, their application and their negative effects in order to promote the initial application of traffic calming in China. This thesis briefly analyzes the demand of the traffic calming measures, and introduces the application process of traffic calming measures in China combined the application process of traffic calming measures abroad and the situation of China. This thesis provides some design factors and some commonly used traffic calming facilities’ typical layout and size combined with the domestic and foreign literature and specifications. This thesis establishes evaluation model in order to choose the best traffic calming measures from the alternative measures. The evaluation model can also be used to determine whether the current measures are reasonable or not. By investigating the current situation of the application of traffic calming measures, this thesis describes the unreasonable situation of the traffic calming measures, the recommendation locations of the traffic calming measures and the attention points of the application of traffic calming measures.This thesis will provide references to road practitioners and help the preparation of the relevant norms in the future.
