Since ancient times, Wushan Historic District has been a famous scenic resort as well as a concentration of religions and cultures, with profound historical heritage and abundant cultural value. In 2015, Wushan Historic District was integrated into Seven Lanes and Three Alleys, becoming a part of that national 5A scenic spot. Fuzhou municipal government has strengthened the protection of this district and promoted the relocation of the Provincial Meteorological Bureau and the Provincial TV Station. Wushan Historic District is facing an important task of landscape-enhancement. However, the task is challenged with many problems owing to its dual natures of cultural relics and comprehensive urban park. One problem is the conservation of cultural heritage and cultural relics of wu mountain scenic area, the other problem is the modern landscape design methods and the historical preservation. As a result, how to achieve a balance between inheriting historical context and satisfying the needs of modern people, has become the key to this enhancement design. This paper analysed and evaluated the location, natural conditions, cultural resources and the current situation of Wushan Historic District, by ways of literature review, field research, case reference and statistical analysis. By summing up our study, we find that Wushan Historic District is gifted with convenient transportation, superior natural conditions and abundant cultural resources. The current situation is analysed from seven aspects:land use status, ancient and rare trees, architecture, cliff inscriptions, infrastructure, present situation of Wushan Thirty Six Scenes, existing licensed sites and grading evaluation. This status analysis offers a lot of information: Units and city parks accounts for a large area, among which land used by 101 Radio Station and the Provincial Meteorological Bureau will be reclaimed in this enhancement design. Wushan has a rich resources of old and precious trees——four species altogether 16 trees which mainly are Ficus microcarpa, Celtis sinensis, Ulmus parvifolia and Cordia dichotoma. There are 21 extant historical and cultural architectures in Wushan including 9 cultural protection architectures and 12 historical buildings, concentrated mainly in First Mountaion Scenic Spot and Tian Huangling Scenic Area. More than 200 cliff carvings are found in Wushan with the characteristics of large scale and quantity, wide time distribution and various font types. These well-preserved carvings are often combined with old and famous trees or odd rocks to form a scenic spot, which plays a positive role in restoring the landscape and history of Wushan. Wushan Historic District has quite a few entrances but their uneven distribution fails to meet the tourist capacity. The traffic system does not separate pedestrian and vehicles, with inadequate and unevenly distributed parking spaces. Facilities such as garbage bins and benches are old and insufficient. Wushan Thirty Six Scenes have been partly restored, with some historical heritage attractions remaining to be solved. Among the 47 licenced scenic spots, fourteen spots belong to the Thirty Six Wonders and the remaining 33 are historical attractions.Based on HUL (Historic Urban Landscape) theory, space syntax theory, city image theory and urban morphology theory, the landscape improvement plan will be designed with the concept of restoring historical memory, improving environmental features and extending historical tracks. Taken into consideration of space landscape, architectural landscape, ecological landscape, historical landscape, traffic system design and supporting facilities design, the enhancement design will be finally determined. This design, on the premise of preserving cultural relics and historic sites, will further improve the historical landscape in Wushan Historic District and meet the needs of modern people.
