Railway is one of China’s important means of transportation. As China’s economy is developing rapidly and high-speed rail era is coming all round, China has lifted a new upsurge of railway construction. Railway passenger station front district, which is not only the transportation hub space in cities but also urban "window" space, exists as urban multi-functional space and its construction activities have drawn more and more attention. Besides, it has become a subject in hot debate for urban development in recent years, in the meantime, it has triggered contemplations on various problems in station front district space.Throughout construction situation of China’s railway passenger station front district, no matter for station front districts constructed under early-stage background or for those constructed in new period, there are deficiencies at different layers such as traffic disturbance, poor pedestrian traffic capacity, loss of comprehensive functions, low environmental quality, shortage of humanization in public space, etc. These phenomena reveal that railway passenger station front district design is still short of overall consideration at systematic layer, so it’s necessary to consider and optimize station front district from the perspective of urban design. In recent years, railway construction activities proceeding like a raging fire in Chengdu provide fresh and alive study cases for this paper. This paper, taking Chengdu as foothold, has conducted thorough interpretation, after which it has found some problems and some items being worthy of reference. This paper firstly determined relevant concept and nature of railway passenger station front districts and then put forward spatial elements of station front districts from the perspective of urban design; secondly, it studied relevant typical cases and obtained advanced experiment; thirdly, it conducted in-depth investigation and analysis of Chengdu cases with spatial elements from the perspective of urban design-transportation system, public space, functional organization and landscape environment, and then discussed about their advantages and disadvantages. Finally, according to above study contents, it proposed optimized design principles of railway passenger station front districts from the perspective of urban design. Directing at optimization strategies of transportation system, public space, functional organization and landscape environment. This paper sets its sights on scientificity and practicability of study contents, hoping to provide reference for construction and development of China’s railway passenger station front districts.
