The Spirit Of Calligraphy And The Form Of Architecture

With the constant social development, self-confidence of culture has become an important symbol of the national progress. As a part of traditional culture, calligraphy is known as "the treasure of Chinese civilization"for its rich connotation, enchanting artistry and various forms. Apart from that, with unique writing techniques, touches and structures, Chinese calligraphy has been an independent, superb and unparalleled art form that is remarkably splendid and profound.From the artistic perspective of calligraphy, with architecture as the subject, this paper, developing from the three aspects of "writing", "method" and "fluidity", studies the relations between the spirit of calligraphy and the form of architecture, and tries to find out their shared features after the exemplified comparison and conclusion. The study explored the possible influences of calligraphic spirit on architectural forms. The main body of this paper consists of three chapters (from Chapter Two to Chapter Four):Firstly, it studies the relationship between calligraphic spirit and architectural forms (in Chapter Two) and focuses on the common points between the nature of handwriting and that of the architectural forms; secondly, it studies the influences of calligraphic spirit on architectural forms (in Chapter Three), in which the implication of calligraphic spirit for the architectural creation is illustrated; finally, it studies the applications of calligraphic spirit in the field of architectural forms (in Chapter Four), which highlights the significance of calligraphic spirit for architectural creation.After discussing calligraphy as well as architectural forms, and differentiating between them, it can be concluded that they are interlinked in the aspects of creating modes, aesthetics, spaces and shapes, which indicates that they can draw inspirations from each other, though these two belong to different categories and have their own logics. Since architectural design is an absorbable and all-inclusive subject, any useful element can be applied in it with bold trials and practices. Under the background mentioned above, this paper endeavors to seek out the instructive significance of calligraphic spirit on architectural design, which can provide enlightenment and a new direction for forms, thus leading a breakthrough on architectural creation.
