Urban rail transit in China has been developed rapidly with construction of big amount of lines and realization of mature operational technology. Passenger volume attracted by urban rail transit has been increasing fast and problems of crowding in stations and trains have occurred. It is urgent to research on how to manage and control passenger flow in consideration of coordination inside urban rail transit systems. This paper focuses on the urban rail transit system consisting of a single line and stations on it. A method of line capacity distribution combined with passenger demand management is adopted to solve passenger crowding problems. Contents of this paper are listed as follows:(1) Passenger demand characters and line capacity supply conditions are studied. Three aspects of passenger characters are studied, which are passenger choice behavior of start stations, passenger distribution in time and space, and propagation characters of passenger flow among stations. Line capacity supply conditions are influenced by car types, technical parameters for train running and matching degree of passenger demand.(2) Concepts and theory of coordination control of passenger flow in multi stations for a single line are established. The structure and operation flow of a line system are analyzed. A definition and relevant explanations of coordination control for passenger flow in multi stations of a single line are made. Two coordination control methods, which are coordination organization of boarding limiting in multi stations and train operation scheme adjustment, are used to solve the problems of passenger crowding. Effects of coordination control of passenger flow in multi stations are studied and evaluated by two coefficients.(3) Modelling, algorithm solving and case application are finished in a row. A model of coordination control for passenger flow in multi stations of a single line is made. The objective function is to maximize total boarding passenger volume and minimize the variance of boarding rates in each station. Procedures of passenger choosing start stations, train operation scheme realization, boarding limiting and passenger entering a station, passenger boarding and alighting, and train running according to a timetable are expressed by mathematical constraints. Model solving algorithm based on genetic algorithm is adopted. Finally, a case of Line 3 in Guangzhou Metro is studied using the model and algorithm to verify validity.
