The pulley, acted as the main bearing parts of belt conveyor, are in sophisticated behaviors, and has been under variable normal load tangential load. With the belt conveyor pulley developing into large scale, traditional analytic method cannot guarantee the reliability and economy, for pulley systems bearing with so complex load. So we need to choose modern design method to complete the design of pulley. In recent decades, finite element analysis technology, due to its high efficiency and accuracy, has been widely accepted and used in the engineering field. In order to design a pulley which is light weight, high strength, safe and reliable on operation, it is of important significance to improve the overall design level to apply finite element analysis technique in the calculation of pulley.Synthetically using the large CAE software-ANSYS, finite element analysis is conducted on the drum. The stress and deformation rules of every component of pulley can explain the failure reason of roller in a certain range and have certain guiding significance for structural design of the drum. First briefly introduced the structure and type of drum and force analysis has been done at length. Then introduced the related content about linear static analysis and nonlinear contact of ANSYS software, and systematically summarized the principles of finite element modeling and establishment method. Then analyze the drive pulley by an example. To accurately investigate the impact of external load on the rollers, the drum as a whole structure has been done a linear static analysis. Surface load along the circumferential direction is considered as a exponential distribution in accordance with the Euler formula and a half sine distribution along the axial direction, when consider the analysis process. The results were analyzed in detail and check, considering the effects of static arc and sliding arc on the surface load. Angle size has a major impact on pulley stress, so compared the force analysis of roller in different wrap angle. Finally, considering the effect of prestress of expansion sleeve, to simulate the interference fit joint of shaft and hub, use the nonlinear contact analysis of ANSYS and compared the results with the whole’. The overall model analysis is feasible In certain conditions.In view of the relative complexity of ANSYS modeling and pulley model serialization feature, conducting a secondary development, mainly used the object-oriented programming language Visual Basic and parametric design language APDL in ANSYS, to develop belt conveyor pulley parametric finite element analysis software, which will easily improve the work efficiency, and has some practical value.
