In recent years, with the development trend of automotive industry, the category and number of standard feature parts has risen in the design process of mechanical products. To a certain extent, the standardization of parts has become an important symbol of product development level for a country and an enterprise. Therefore, the establishment of characteristic database, which satisfies the national standards and is interchangeable between enterprises, is an important method for improving the design efficiency.The goal of this paper is to study the establishment method of autobody panels feature library. The feature library is established by secondary development technology, and meets the national standard and the demand of the enterprises. This paper focuses on the following four aspects of research work:(1) The development environment of CATIA and CAA module are analyzed and compared to determine the method of secondary development;(2) The feature parts of autobody panels are classified, and feature template is established;(3) The internal of the program system is programmed, and the system of feature library is established;(4) Take side panel of some automobile for example, the established feature library is verified.In order to select the method of secondary development, the advantages and disadvantages of the two development method and development tools are analyzed. The method of CAAV5 C++ are determined to used for secondary development, combined with previous research experience in this paper. In order to clarify the classification of the autobody panels, the data information of different type of automobile is collected and organized. The characteristic of autobody panels are divided into 14 categories, each of which is subdivided into different categories; The size and process requirements of characteristics are given, which combined with function and characteristics of features; The specific method and process of modeling of each kind of features are completed; The feature templates are designed, including packing and input conditions and parametric release, which laid the good foundation for the establishment of the feature library. The feature library is established by secondary development of internal programming, including command box, dialog boxes, the callback function and program code of each features. The programs are activated, then the internal is programmed and the external visual is designed, so that the users can directly operation according to the command. The designed programs are released after establishing the feature library. In order to verify the established feature library, side panel of some automobile is taken as example. First of all, the panel is simplified by parameterized processing, and the features can be chosen and called in the feature library. Compared with the traditional manual modeling, the advantages of feature library are obvious, which operates simple and rapid, and the parameters are easy to modify and edit. This research work provides a scientific and feasible method to establish featu re library for autobody panels based on CATIA platform, and provides a scientific basis for secondary development and application of feature library on the autobody panels.
