The Protection And Renewal Of Colonial Period Industrial Heritages Of Qingdao Under The Historic Urban Landscape Method

Since the “Industrial Archaeology” launched in the UK, 1950 s, the protection of high-valued industrial heritages has gradually expanded from Europe to the whole world. After entering the 21 st Century, the protection of industrial heritages has become a global consensus. In China, the protection and renewal work of industrial heritages started in 1980 s, after nearly 30 years of development, we have made remarkable achievements in many aspects. But on the whole, the protection of industrial heritages in our country is still in the primary stage, the gaps in protection, research and practice results are still very obvious between us and the western developed countries.To Qingdao, as an industrial city with long colonial history, the colonial period industrial heritages account for the vast majority of Qingdao modern industrial heritages. As the products of industrial civilization, the colonial period industry heritages have important value of retention and historical significance, and they are also the important historical relics to reflect the modern urban construction and industrial development of Qingdao. However, nowadays the type of scattered point and spontaneous protection and renewal have obvious defects in Qingdao, it cannot effectively protect the historical style and the historical context of the industrial heritages, and cannot tally with the industrial structure adjustment of this city. The long-term use of such inappropriate protection and renewal methods, not only will damage the value of the colonial period industrial heritages, but also further reduce its role and position in the development of the city. In this case, the historic urban landscape method and the dynamic equilibrium theory of historic urban heritages’ protection and urban development it advocated provide a new way to solve the main problems existing in the protection and renewal of colonial period industrial heritage in Qingdao.This paper takes the colonial period industrial heritages as the main research object. First, through the investigation of the colonial period historic urban landscapes and industrial heritages in Qingdao, we find the main problems in the protection and renewal of colonial period industrial heritages. Then from the perspective of solving problems, we discuss the feasibility and basic principles of the application of the historic urban landscape method in the protection of colonial period industrial heritages,and propose the basic strategies and some feasible update modes. Finally, with the analysis of the successful example-----Tsingtao Beer Museum, we point out that the historic urban landscape method is a practical and effective means to solve the contradiction between the protection and renewal of the colonial period industrial heritages and the long-term, continued development in Qingdao.
