The Modern Garden A Preliminary Study Of Xi’an(1840 ~1949)

With the collision and blending of Chinese and western culture, great changes have taken place in Xi ’an modern gardens and urban landscape and of particular features since 1940.This article has explained the evolution of modern Xi ’an garden by simply combing to Xi’an gardens, further discussing the influence of the evolution of Xi ’an on urban space and social life.This paper consists of the following sections: first, the development of Xi ’an modern garden and landscape type;Second, public gardens,temple gardens, private gardens academy gardens, palace garden and the memorial garden are selected as the typical example with the analysis from the garden evolution of construction and landscape culture. Three, Xi’an modern landscape construction methods and techniques are explored and researched from the aspects of location, rock,water, building, plants and animals, match well of Chinese and western, social functions,etc.Through the methods of basic data research, field investigation, case study and comparative analysis research and quantitative research, the paper discusses modern gardens in Xian, the result suggests as fellows. First, Xi ’an modern landscape architectural style is combination of Chinese and western style, and the building volume is increasing in landscape gardening.In this period, the garden style is the trend from tradition to westernization to integration. Second, modern park combined with the ancient traditional garden.by reforming and building of the remains of ancient Chinese gardens, the Xi’an gardens have formed ancient times and modern garden landscapeoccurring together.Third, the botanical garden function intensified.The corresponding facilities inside public gardens, integrating amusement and ornamental.Fourth, Xi ’an modern landscape spatial distribution showed the feature of the city distribution appears on a diminishing scale from south to the north, affecting the distribution pattern of landscape in Xi’an now.
