The Research On “Vrticality” Of Architecture In Lingnan Garden

The “Verticality” mentioned in the dissertation refer to the building with two or more floors, or we can say that it is a trend to raise the living area to higher altitude. It is called “verticality” because of a general standpoint that western architecture is developed in the height, while eastern architecture is developed on the ground. However, “verticality” has been mentioned by many scholars as a characteristic of Lingnan Garden. Multi-storied pavilion is a basic parts of Chinese traditional Garden, then what difference is there between the multi-storied pavilion and the verticality of Lingnan Garden, and what factors had led to the difference?First, I compared the difference of process of verticality development between Lingnan Garden and Jiangnan Garden. Then I found that the processes of verticality development are similar between the two. That means the difference of verticality is not of use of not use verticality, but the different forms of verticality.By comparing forms of verticality in Jiangnan Garden and Lingnan Garden, the author found that the characteristic of verticality in Lingnan Garden lies in four aspects:1. The space of view lies in higher place. 2. The multi-storied pavilions in Lingnan are connected with each other, while they are isolated in Jiangnan Garden. 3. The nature of pavilion is more open in LIngnan Garden, which are used for receiving visitors or something, than that in Jiangnan Garden. 4. There were building more than 10 meters high in Lingnan Garden, but can be seen rarely in Jiangnan GardenThen the author analyzed the reasons led to the verticality characteristic in Lingnan Garden, they can be summarized as four reasons: 1. Limited by the land area. 2. Influenced by western architecture. 3. Influenced by merchants’ Garden. 4. Influenced by vernacular dwelling.The purpose of research on the verticality of Lingnan Garden is not merely to study the history but to guide the architecture design in new era. The dissertation refers to a project in practice the author took part in. In the project, designers introduce the verticality in to it, and produced lots of benefits. But it was not a use in purpose, but a method which suitable to the area the most.
