Earthen heritage sites which have high historical, artistic, cultural and scientific values were regarded as one of the most important type of sites. Earthen heritage sites museum builded above the earthen heritage sites was the important form in earthen heritage sites protecting. The earthen heritage sites museum had important educational meanings while providing unique experiences in learning and travelling to visitors and residents, no matter the structure of earthen heritage sites was opened or enclosed. However the protection offered by the current earthen heritage sites museum was far from ideal requirements. Even the environment of some earthen heritage sites museum was extremely bad that would do some detrimental to the protection of sites and always failed in offering comfortable visiting experience to the visitors. Therefore it was urgent that immediate measures should be taken to improve the environment in the current earthen heritage sites museum, and the design of the new earthen heritage sites museum would be a big problem.Through a lot of literature analysis, the temperature, relative humidity, air velocity, carbon dioxide concentrations in earthen heritage sites museum were selected as the important factors that affect the protection of earthen heritage sites. So the air quality of earthen heritage sites was studied based on the temperature, relative humidity, air velocity, carbon dioxide concentrations. The earthen heritage sites were the unique and major part of earthen heritage sites museum. However, this was the most vulnerable part and so it was the key point of the heritage preservation work of sites museum. The earthen heritage sites not only provided collections to the sites museum, but also they were regarded as the essence in tourist’s trip. Therefore, the priority of the air quality was to creat a good preservation of environment for the earthen heritage sites museum. Secondly, it should also offered visitors a comfortable visiting environment. However, the requirements of temperature, relative humidity, air velocity, carbon dioxide concentration vary widely between the preservation of earthen heritage sites and tourists’ comfort. Thus, the air quality of which kind of the earthen heritage sites museum could offer tourists a better visiting experience while it fulfiled the preservation of earthen heritage sites had became another problem. In the need of the sub-project-- Research on the architectural pattern, technology and guidelines of the sites museum--of the program of National "Twelfth Five-Year" Plan for Science and Technology Support < Research on key technologies of environmental monitoring in sites Museum >, and the national natural science foundation program ‘Research in the regulation theory and technology of heat and moisture environment of Mogao Grottoes cave under the multi field coupling condition’, the research group selected the representative earthen heritage sites museum in nationwide to conduct field research and current investigation. The opened form earthen heritage sites museum included Terracotta Warriors and Horses of Qin Shihuang Mausoleum Sites Museum in Xi’an, Shaanxi; Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang, Gansu; Jinsha Sites Museum in Chengdu, Sichuan; Tianluoshan Sites Museum in Yuyao, Zhejiang; Hong Shan Sites Museum in Wuxi, Jiangsu; Shanghai Yuan Dynasty Water Gate Museum; and the enclosed form earthen heritage sites museum included Xiongjiazhong Sites Museum in Jingzhou, Hubei and Hanyangling Museum. Pinpoint tests were conducted separately in each museum of its temperature, relative humidity, air velocity, carbon dioxide concentrations for 24 hours. And the setpoint tests were also conducted in museum horizontal space. The daily circulation law of indoor temperature, humidity, air velocity, carbon dioxide concentration of earthen heritage sites museum was analysed based on the data of pinpoint test. Simulation study was taken on the indoor temperature, humidity, air velocity, carbon dioxide concentration distribution field of sites museum according to the data of setpoint test. Above on this, the air quality of each earthen heritage sites museum was evaluated. Accordingly improving measures and monitoring managements had been proposed through comparative analysis and reasonable discussion. Finally, it was suggested that the enclosed sites museum regulated by central air-conditioning separately in sites zone and visit zone was the most suitable form for earthen heritage sites museum.
