The West Lake in Chaozhou, as one of the four extant examples of Lingnan prefecture garden, is the only one ancient West Lake in Chaoshan,with distinctive Lingnan features. Not only has it inspired generations of poets and demoted-officials creating works, but also provide living benefits of water production and prosperous agriculture and fisheries for the local people. It has been a scenery resort suiting both refined and popular tastes and appealing to both officials and public, with a profound cultural heritage and historical value. The results of this thesis would append some powerful content to Lingnan garden extant examples.In this thesis, the research work is based on reading large amount of ancient literature and field investigation. Readings include historical records( such as " Yongle Dadian "), local history( prefecture history, county history, and mountain history, etc.), poetry, thesis, archeology results and image information, etc. The investigation includes site visits and interviews, etc. This thesis analyzes the formation, changing, content, features and scenic value of West Lake in Chaozhou by the method of developing and accumulating time dimension.The thesis mainly includes following four chapters:1.The introduction: the author introduces the background of subject selection, the relevant theoretical basis, the research status and the research framework of this thesis.2.The background: the author studies and researches the overall garden environment of the West Lake in Chaozhou, and from the various elements of topography, hydrology, climate, culture and history analyzes the driving force affecting for the formation and change of West Lake scenic area in Chaozhou.3.The main body of the thesis: the author explores the rise and fall of West Lake in Chaozhou through the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing the five dynasties, without almost any basis of previous studies.The studies have shown that the development of the West Lake Garden in Chaozhou is closely related with social stability, productivity development, cultural influence and other factors. In general, can be summarized as follows: beginning in the Tang Dynasty, famous in the Song Dynasty, wasted in the Yuan Dynasty, highly developing in the Ming Dynasty and prosperous in the Qing Dynasty.4.The conclusion: based on the previous research, the author summarizes the gardening characteristics of the West Lake scenic area in Chaozhou, and can be generalized as four points: ecology, culture, productivity and development.Combined with the current research of Chinese classical garden, especially Lingnan garden, this study combs the historical changes in the past and present, rich cultural connotation and practical functions of the West Lake in Chaozhou, summarizing its gardening features. The author hopes it could provide some design basis for the Lingnan region, particularly for the Chaozhou area constructing landscape cities, and modest contribution for her hometown as well.
